Best Fashion Trends of 2022 Explained

If we have learned nothing, let this be true - that fashion cycles come and go; it is reinvented and recycled as a seed from a flower.

While forecasting fashion trends that originate on the runway isn’t a total exercise in futility—it will always hold influence—it seems designers and retailers are more frequently looking to social media, youth culture, nostalgia, street style, and celebrities for inspiration about what’s cool and what’s current.

The most current fashion trends are those that feel easy to wear but still look as though you made just enough effort to do whatever it is you do during these strange, novel days and nights. Whether that’s daily Zoom meetings and a few essential errands, the occasional (safe!) outdoor dinner, weekend park outings, or in-person work, we could use clothing that gives us a distinct sense of ease and comfort.

SWEETHEART MINI DRESSES

PUFF SLEEVE ILLUSION NECK MINI DRESS

Price: USD64.00

If the recent celebrity trends tell a story, mini dresses (miniskirt dresses) are here to stay, as evidenced by Megan d' Stallion's Instagram feed.

Did you know that the creation of the miniskirt is attributed to the legendary English designer Mary Quant? In the '60s and '70s, it was almost a mandatory trend. After her, several designers became famous for presenting pieces with mini hemlines, such as Courrèges with its futuristic fashion.

Runways have always embraced all things micro, and as we re-awaken from our covid slumber, our hemlines seem to be getting shorter in bold prints and design. At the Spring and Fall 2021 fashion show, the reoccurring theme of tiny skirts, jackets and dresses was the trend for brands like Saint Laurent, Versace and even Chanel.

VELVET DESIGN SKIRTS

RHINESTONE SLIT VELVET PENCIL SKIRT

Price: USD46.00

Velvet is coming back on trend for fall-winter 2022/23.
This tasteful, timeless material has been the rage of fashion since the ancient Egyptians. Revered for its rich, decadent finish, it's been a symbol of class and status. Velvet reemerged in popularity in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s as sophisticated ball gowns, sexy mini dresses and playful skirts.
I am feeling plush! Velvet is a timeless winter trend, perfectly fit for all the holiday season's festivities. Cosy, luxurious, and gorgeous in every colour material is a go-to for fashionistas with a calendar packed with winter parties. Celebrities love velvet on the red carpet, often strutting in soft, shiny silhouettes at premieres and awards shows.

BELTED SHACKETS

 BELTED CROP CORDUROY SHACKET

Price: USD30.00

For the upcoming fashionista, a shacket is a crossover between a shirt and a jacket. Shackets give off a slouchy and laidback look. If you want to take this chilled-out aesthetic to the next level, consider pairing your shacket with a cute pair of shorts or pants and chunky boots. This look works even better when the shoes are a statement colour, making the outfit alternative and edgy.

The first “shacket” was the CPO jacket, a thick wool shirt with breast pockets issued to chief petty officers in the US Navy in the 1930s. In the 1970s, trendsetters wore plaid or military-inspired overshirts over a fine-knit turtleneck sweater with jeans or corduroys.

Shackets are a closet staple that keeps giving looks.

ASYMMETRICAL DRESS

 ASYMMETRICAL NECK WRAP DRESS

Price: USD65.00

The asymmetrical dress gained popularity as a covetous trend in the 1980s due to the playfulness of its hemline. After waning for several years, the look re-emerged in Europe and America and later became the focus of attention during the Spring and Summer 2012 fashion runways.

Apart from the slanted skirts, many other fashion items have now taken the asymmetric look of one side cuts like cardigans and blouses at the neckline.

PUFF SLEEVE

SEQUINED PUFF SLEEVE OFF-SHOULDER MINI DRESS

Price: USD41.00

Puffed sleeves are a fun trend for 2022, returning season after season; the puff-sleeve trend is here to stay

Puff sleeves date back to the Renaissance period of Europe, from the 14th to the 17th century. This form of the puff sleeve was called the Juliet sleeve, named after Shakespeare's heroine in “Romeo and Juliet.” It features a large puff near the shoulder that narrows for the rest of the arm's length.

The puff sleeve trend resurfaced around 2018 when '80s references raved the runway. The big, rounded shoulders accented by balloon sleeves took dresses, tops, blazers and coats to new, voluminous heights. The result? An aspherical statement that's certainly hard to miss. You can still absolutely incorporate statement pieces into your wardrobe!

SATIN DRESSES

RUCHED SPAGHETTI STRAP SATIN DRESS

Price: USD29.00

Satin first became popular in the middle ages in China. The cloth is named after the port where it originated, Zaitum. Satin was considered a luxury item used for commercial trading purposes throughout China and the Arab world during the 12th century.

The luxurious and elegant fabric is becoming a wardrobe staple because of its versatility. Its fluidity makes it perfect for all silhouettes and can transition from day to night with ease. Just because it's creamy doesn't mean it's sheer. This one is cut from weighty silk-satin to keep your style.
