While forecasting fashion trends that originate on the runway isn’t a total exercise in futility—it will always hold influence—it seems designers and retailers are more frequently looking to social media, youth culture, nostalgia, street style, and celebrities for inspiration about what’s cool and what’s current.
The most current fashion trends are those that feel easy to wear but still look as though you made just enough effort to do whatever it is you do during these strange, novel days and nights. Whether that’s daily Zoom meetings and a few essential errands, the occasional (safe!) outdoor dinner, weekend park outings, or in-person work, we could use clothing that gives us a distinct sense of ease and comfort.

If the recent celebrity trends tell a story, mini dresses (miniskirt dresses) are here to stay, as evidenced by Megan d' Stallion's Instagram feed. Cosy, luxurious, and gorgeous in every colour material is a go-to for fashionistas with a calendar packed with winter parties. Celebrities love velvet on the red carpet, often strutting in soft, shiny silhouettes at premieres and awards shows.

BELTED SHACKETS

For the upcoming fashionista, a shacket is a crossover between a shirt and a jacket. Shackets give off a slouchy and laidback look. If you want to take this chilled-out aesthetic to the next level, consider pairing your shacket with a cute pair of shorts or pants and chunky boots. This look works even better when the shoes are a statement colour, making the outfit alternative and edgy. The first “shacket” was the CPO jacket, a thick wool shirt with breast pockets issued to chief petty officers in the US Navy in the 1930s. Puffed sleeves are a fun trend for 2022, returning season after season; the puff-sleeve trend is here to stay. Puff sleeves date back to the Renaissance period of Europe, from the 14th to the 17th century. This form of the puff sleeve was called the Juliet sleeve, named after Shakespeare's heroine in “Romeo and Juliet.” It features a large puff near the shoulder that narrows for the rest of the arm's length. The puff sleeve trend resurfaced around 2018 when '80s references raved the runway. The big, rounded shoulders accented by balloon sleeves took dresses, tops, blazers and coats to new, voluminous heights. The result? An aspherical statement that's certainly hard to miss.
